How do I get my Windows 2K3 server to email me when it logs an error such as failed hardware?

Is this capability built in to 2K3 or is there 3rd party software that needs to be purchased? Anything open source to make thinks cheaper?

It really depends on the who made the server. If for instance it is a HP server then it uses Insight manager, this is a server management tool with the functionality you require.


Dell uses Open manager.


Hardware failure depends on software that can access the BIOS to report error, if the server is a self build the motherboard manufacturer may provide some tools.


Unfortunately I have to log in to servers to check for errors.





Of course you could right an SQL script if you know SQL and have it installed on a server

Reply:That capability is not built in to Windows Server 2003. Most tier one hardware manufacturers (IBM, Dell, HP, etc.) include management software with their servers that can do that.





If you're running tier two or white box systems you'll need a third party package to do it. Major players include HP Open View, IBM Tivoli or Microsoft Operations Manager. There probably are open source options though I haven't looked into any as we run strictly tier one equipment at the place where I work.
Reply:should be down to the company who run your server to send email notifications....for example the company of IT professionals who installed your server. get onto them and they should be able to sort this for you! :-)
