I cant get yahoo to let me use outlook or windows email. is there a specific way. can it be done. if not how can i get a free server-based email address.

yahoo does not allow pop access for free. it's only available in the yearly fee uprade.
gmail offers pop and imap. imap is like pop except it syncs with all your wireless devices too so you can check email on your iphone and the messages you read will appear as read when you log into thunderbird or outlook or whatever pop/imap client you use.
